Principal photography has begun on The Evil Dead – Sony and Ghost House Pictures’ remake of Sam Raimi’s cult 1981 horror of the same name. Produced by Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell, the new film sees Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez making his feature debut, directing a cast of up-and-coming talent that includes Jane Levy (Suburgatory) as Mia, Shiloh Fernandez (Red Riding Hood) as David, Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric, Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker) as Natalie.

As part of the official announcement, the studio also issued the following synopsis, which naturally doesn’t offer up anything in the way of surprises:

“Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.”

In other Evil Dead news, Renaissance Pictures – the production company formed by Raimi, Tapert and Campbell in order to develop the original movie – have taken legal action to prevent a proposed fourth installment from Award Pictures. Who, I hear you ask? Well, I’ve no idea, but apparently they’ve been developing an unofficial sequel entitled Evil Dead 4: Consequences, which according to The Wrap, “would take place in 1912 and center on a new hero, an archeologist named Dr. Ashley, but it would focus on revealing the origin of the Necronomicon.”

As it turns out, Award Pictures have never officially secured the rights to the Evil Dead franchise. Instead, they believe they’re entitled to produce the sequel due to comments from Raimi and Tapert in the 2000 book The Evil Dead Companion, where the duo were quoted as saying that “we’re never going to do a sequel.” Riiiiight. I wonder how long it will be before this Award Pictures announce Star Wars: Episode VII and The Dark Knight Rises Again… Oh, that’s right – they’ll be out of business before then.

The Evil Dead remake is finally rounding out its cast.

Jessica Lucas, who was one of the stars of CW’s Melrose Place, is in talks to join the production, being made by FilmDistrict and Ghost House while relative newcomer Elizabeth Blackmore is set for a role in the horror movie.

Fede Alvarez is in the director’s seat for the remake, which sees five friends hole up in a cabin in a woods as one of them tries to undergo a drug withdrawal. Unfortunately, they discover a Book of the Dead and unleash demons.

Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez and Lou Taylor Pucci are already on board.

If a deal makes, Lucas will play the best friend of the girl going through withdrawal (Levy) who is also a nurse. Blackmore is playing the fiancée of Fernandez and new to the group.

Production is due to start April in New Zealand.

Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell will produce through Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures banner.

Canadian-born Lucas was part of J.J. Abrams’ ensemble monster movie Cloverfield and appeared on TV shows 90210 and Friends with Benefits. She is also cast in the Josh Schwartz’s CW pilot Cult. She is repped by Gersh, Thruline and Lichter Grossman.

Blackmore appeared in the TV show Legend of the Seeker.

Thumbsucker and Carriers star Lou Taylor Pucci (an ex-Sundance Darling once targeted by Steven Spielberg) is in talks to join the young ensemble of The Evil Dead remake.

Pucci will play Eric, an intense academic whose intellectual curiosity gets his group of friends into trouble. In short, he’ll be reading out of the “Book of the Dead” and resurrecting “Him”.

He joins Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez and Bruce Campbell i the remake of Raimi’s classic being helmed by Fede Alvarez.

FilmDistrict hopes to get it into theaters by April 12, 2013.

Jane Levy is in talks to play the lead in the remake of Evil Dead that Fede Alvarez will direct shortly. She replaces Lily Collins, who exited the film recently. Levy is the star of the ABC series Suburgatory, and stars in Fun Size, the Josh Schwartz-directed film for Paramount.

In FilmDistrict’s remake of Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, Levy’s plays Mia, a character that corresponds to Ash, who was played by Bruce Campbell in the original 1981 movie. Mia is one of five young people who head to the remote cabin where evil awaits. Recovering from a recent overdose, Mia is particularly vulnerable. Raimi, Campbell and Rob Tapert are producing with Ghost House Pictures. Fede Alvarez is directing and co-wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues. Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult) revised the latest draft. The movie is targeted to open April 12, 2013. Levy is repped by Gersh, Susskin Management and Robert Offer.
